I am not fully convinced on what I like better – Video Production, Post Production or Writing. But then it seems that researching and interviewing are also my true loves. I have an insatiable appetite for information which ranges from researching past events to experiencing new things to probing the minds of the people I meet.

I have worked in the Video Production Industry since the 90’s and have seen it evolve. From graphics, to audio, to editing I have had my hands in it all. I worked in front of the camera and behind it. I can operate the cameras or the editing equipment. I can research topics or interview and host. I can create a script and visualize a concept for film and I know how to make it come alive on screen. I can interview an artist, author, musician or philanthropist and learn how their mind works – discover their passions and share their story in an article or on video.

Recently I was asked to offer an explanation of my knowledge of the production and post production process. This is what I said:

It all begins with a thought; something that sparks the interest of a Producer or Writer. It burns inside of them until they feel as if they will explode if they don’t share it. But getting it to be perfectly created visually on a screen involves a team of professionals like no other. Each of the members of the chosen production team must harness their talents to create a masterpiece. The script is written, the actors are cast and the location is found. Beyond creativity the financial wizards are making all of this production possible.

The day of production begins. The actors are studied in their roles. The Director and Producer are ready for action. But there is so much more than these obvious moving objects that make an award winning video production. Not one single person can take the credit for it’s overall success. Lighting is critical to the ambiance of the film, as every shadow and stream of light adds to the atmosphere of the story. Audio is crucial, where it is always necessary to hear every sound and each breath an actor makes. The camera operator and Director of Photography are the eyes of the film. Every angle and camera movement impacts the creation of the perfect visual experience.

Yet, all these aspects of video production can only meld in one place – the editing room at post production. Post production is where the final product is completed. After numerous cuts and splices, and endless color corrections, finding the perfect shot becomes the ultimate goal. With every edit, every musical choice and every sound effect, whether it be cut to the beat or against it, the final product will emerge.

Thus, the process of a completed video production is somewhat like raising a child. Giving every part of yourself, as does your production team, working through the sweat, blood and tears to create your idea of perfection. Then sending it out into the world to see who loves it and how far it will go.
